Suggested ways to use the book
Questions at the end
We believe that reading with your child creates a beautiful space for them to feel safe to express their thoughts and feelings. Don't have time every day to read to each child? Then consider a group reading, where every child can contribute.
After reading the book once through, ask your child to find the bear that is different from all the rest. Does she relate to feeling different? What makes him feel apart from the rest of the "pack"? Is it OK, or does your child feel some stress? You can explore further by asking some of the suggested questions, or just going with the flow of the conversation. |
Letters
Using the individual letters can be a very powerful tool. Perhaps your child is aware that his friend's parents are going through a divorce. You can use the divorce letter to discover how your child feels about it. Is he concerned for his friend? Perhaps he's worried that his own parents might divorce.
Having your child pick a letter to read can be even more insightful. Why this letter? Does she feel like Ella or George? Perhaps your child can write - or dictate - a letter talking about an event. Is he happy or sad? If he doesn't know who to address it to, the Teddy Bear is always glad to receive letters! |
Family Days
Family Day is a central theme in the book. What made you a "family"? Is it the arrival of a child? The advent of a pet?
Consider making Family Day an annual event, separate from birthdays and holidays. Or have random Family Days throughout the year. What's most important is celebrating you and your family! |
Playing
Have your child pick a character; what is the character experiencing in the real world ? What would it be like to live in Ella's world? or Geroge's? Would anyone want to be the bear?
Look at the colour of a page. Does your child feel blue, or pink? Does the colour relate to emotions? Can you make up some silly songs that relate to one or more of the letters? Maybe the bear has his own tune? We're sure he'll make everyone laugh! |
These are just some ways you can use the book. Let us know your suggestions and we'll add them.
